Concord, MA – There are people who just can't stand each other. And then there's Constance Fulton and Detective William Asher. The radio reporter makes no secret of the fact that she considers Asher to be an arrogant, humorless stickler for the law. On her show, she hardly misses an opportunity to mock him as a “law enforcer with a stick up his ass” or to denigrate him as incompetent or corrupt.
He, on the other hand, consistently ignores her.
But why is that? An old feud? Job-related rivalry?
At a party, we learned the truth from a lady who happened to make an observation at a restaurant at the next table one evening: Fulton and Asher were on a date. And it was a disaster.
It started out quite harmlessly... here is the exclusive report:
It was a lovely evening, a nice restaurant in Concord, candlelight, two adults talking over a glass of wine at the next table.
“It was surprisingly normal at first,” reports our source. ”He was polite, she was quick-witted – a bit of bickering, but that was to be expected. Then, somewhere between the main course and dessert, Constance leaned in conspiratorially and said,
“I'm interested in alternative consciousness techniques...do you want to have a life-changing experience?”
Asher looked at her skeptically. “And what kind of experience would that be, exactly?”
“I can hypnotize people.”
Asher raised an eyebrow. ”Oh yeah?”
“Yes,” she said. "And I bet I could hypnotize you.”
To be fair, Asher is a pragmatist. A man of evidence. He believes in fingerprints, trace analysis, and eyewitness testimony – not hocus-pocus.
'I was there,’ our informant recounts. 'You could see him sigh inwardly. But he remained polite.'
“Okay,” Asher said. ”Let's do this.”
Then things got awkward.
Constance slowly lifted a spoon—as if she'd had it in mind the whole time as a hypnosis tool—and began to move it back and forth in front of Asher's face.
“Your eyes are getting heavy... you're relaxing... YOU ARE NOW TOTALLY TRUSTING ME ... when I count to three, you will tell me everything.”
Asher blinked. “Everything - about what?”
“EVERYTHING - whatever I ask you.”
“Hm.” He took a sip of water. “I don't think this is going to work.”
Constance was not deterred. She leaned in even closer to him, lowering her voice. “You can't hide anything from me, William...”
“Constance,” he said dryly. “I'm not hypnotized.”
She leaned back, clearly unimpressed. ”You're just saying that because your subconscious doesn't allow it yet.”
There was a brief, uncomfortable silence. Then Asher beckoned to the waiter, paid the bill and said in a calm voice:
“I hope you have a nice evening, Constance,” got up and just left her sitting there.
And that was it. He would definitely never call again.<
(From our trusted but ultimately nosy source)
The question remains: why on earth did she want to hypnotize him?
Three theories:
- Curiosity – maybe she just wanted to see if it worked.
- Journalistic ambition – was she trying to get him to reveal a scoop? A secret police source? The truth about the mysterious disappearance of her first boyfriend? Maybe she thought he would divulge police secrets in a trance state.
- Pure provocation – because she secretly knew it would drive him crazy.
Whatever the reason - since then, Asher has been avoiding her.
And Constance? She acts as if nothing has happened. Except that she now regularly speculates on her show as to whether Asher “might have a dark secret”.
Or why he reacts so panicked to her questions.
Maybe he was hypnotized after all – and just doesn't remember it?
“We all have our blind spots,” she recently said on air, telling it like it is. ”Sometimes we don't even know what our subconscious is keeping from us.”
Well. If Asher really has a secret, she'll find out about it.
With or without a spoon.
