If you want to dive into a completely different universe alongside the Space World, now is your chance:
Our collaboration partner project is currently running on BackerKit: LUMPIA MANGGA #1.
A sci-fi comic that is part of the crazy-delicious
LUMPIA DEEP FRIED UNIVERSE.
A whole universe based on a Filipino spring roll?
LUMPIA MANGGA currently crowdfunding on Backerkit is the next comic book chapter of a whole wacky delicious saga that started with LUMPIA, a home made movie Patricio Ginelsa directed with his friends as a teenager in Daly City, California.

That action comedy about a silent avenger who stops a gang of thugs from bullying some teens with his weapon of choice- LUMPIA, mixed its tongue-in-cheek, comic book tone with underlying cultural themes. The home made movie got noticed by Hollywood with a positive film review from VARIETY "Taking low-budget to new heights, LUMPIA is a youth project that got delightfully out of hand. " -- Variety, January 14, 2004. After several music video gigs, Ginelsa would later crowdfund the sequel LUMPIA WITH A VENGEANCE from his supporters and finally released in 2020.
Both movies take place in the fictional Fogtown, America’s version of Manila. Much like how Metropolis and Gotham City are comic book counterparts to New York City, Fogtown is inspired by the director’s hometown of Daly City, CA, whose ethnic make-up is mostly Filipino.
Themes of bullying and internal prejudice was a major theme in the first movie, with the Filipino-born high school students beings harassed and bullied by the American-born Tyrone and his crew. LUMPIA WITH A VENGEANCE expands on community differences with themes of classism and community shame packaged in a wacky action comedy. We have the politician ashamed of his accent so he feels more accepted as a professional. We have a father who feels worthless because his whole family still lives in his parent’s house. A daughter who’s made to feel like a mistake. The idea of Crab mentality is a common metaphor with the Filipino community, where one tries to subvert another person’s success.
The new film brought in new fans to the universe and more attention to the original film. The second film also launched its own comic book as a marketing tool. The first issue of the comic was also crowdfunded and peaked so much interest that soon, more comics and spin-offs were crowdfunded by the "lumpia lovers". Today, there are now 3 volumes worth of comic books that expand the movie's storyline. LUMPIA MANGGA will kickoff a whole new chapter taking place 100 years in the future and the first as a sci-fi genre.
Take a look at out LUMPIA MANGGA #1 on BackerKit – but don’t wait too long.
This project also ends tomorrow – the very last chance to be part of it.
